In June 2024, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) saw 5.6 million passengers, marking a 1.4 percent year-on-year increase. However, this growth was influenced by the differing timing of the Whitsun holiday, which fell in June last year but occurred in May this year. Passenger traffic in June 2024 remained about 14.4 percent below the pre-Covid levels of 2019.

During the first half of 2024, approximately 28.8 million passengers traveled through FRA, reflecting a 7.0 percent increase year-on-year. Yet, these numbers were still 14.5 percent lower than the corresponding period in 2019, before the pandemic.

Dr. Stefan Schulte, CEO of Fraport AG, commented: “In the first half of the year, we increased passenger numbers by 1.8 million, welcoming about 28.8 million travelers in Frankfurt. Despite the impact of numerous strikes at the beginning of the year, which resulted in a shortfall of around 500,000 passengers, we are on track to reach our projected volume of 61 to 65 million passengers for the full year. The recovery in the German aviation market, however, continues to be hampered by high location-specific costs imposed by regulators. Our home market lags behind Europe in terms of passenger recovery and needs fresh growth impetus. Other regions, like Greece, Antalya, and Lima, have already surpassed pre-crisis levels.”

Cargo traffic at Frankfurt, including airfreight and airmail, increased by 11.4 percent year-on-year to 178,324 metric tons in June. Aircraft movements also rose by 1.5 percent year-on-year, totaling 39,475 takeoffs and landings, with accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) increasing by 2.3 percent to approximately 2.5 million metric tons.

Fraport’s international portfolio of airports mostly reported passenger growth in June 2024. Ljubljana Airport (LJU) in Slovenia saw a significant increase of 15.3 percent year-on-year to 148,159 passengers. Conversely, the Brazilian airports of Fortaleza (FOR) and Porto Alegre (POA) experienced a combined traffic drop of 53.8 percent to 495,771 passengers, primarily due to the suspension of flight operations at POA following severe flooding in the region. A limited contingency schedule is currently in place at Porto Alegre, with a few domestic flights operating from a nearby military base.

In Peru, Lima Airport (LIM) saw a 16.0 percent year-on-year surge to about 1.9 million passengers. In Europe, Fraport’s 14 Greek regional airports welcomed 5.3 million passengers, up 5.9 percent year-on-year. Bulgaria’s coastal airports, Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR), recorded a 12.5 percent decrease to 481,635 passengers. Meanwhile, Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera saw an 8.6 percent increase, serving approximately 4.9 million travelers in June 2024.

Overall, the airports managed by the Fraport Group reported a 2.2 percent year-on-year increase in total traffic, reaching approximately 18.9 million passengers in June 2024.
