Chef Tommy Banks to open The General Tarleton, a pub with rooms, in Ferrensby, North Yorkshire. It’s the launch of his new hospitality company, Jeopardy Hospitality. The pub is scheduled to open on 29 August 2025.

Restoration for A Historic Venue Is Done Thoughtfully

The General Tarleton is an 18th-century coaching inn that has recently been carefully restored. The pub will offer eight guest rooms, its own private dining area, a large bar and a beer garden. A few miles outside Ferrensby and near the market towns of Harrogate and Knaresborough, it combines history with modern comfort. The restoration preserves the character of the historic building, but adds in new elements to attract both locals and tourists.

Jeopardy Hospitality, A New Venture

The General Tarleton is the first restaurant from Tommy Banks’ new venture, Jeopardy Hospitality. Tommy has joined forces with Matthew Lockwood, James Banks and Neil Armstrong to take his brand to the next level by introducing an offering never seen before in dining and hospitality. Their ambition is to collect establishments that have outstanding food and are also places where guests and staff have a fantastic time and the atmosphere is nourishing for everyone and everything. The vision is to build a collection of venues that pour brilliant food alongside luxurious lodgings, setting the standard for hospitality in the UK.

Leadership Team Brings Strong Experience

Sam Orbaum will serve as general manager of Jeopardy Hospitality. A York shire native, Orbaum a former head of people at the Woodhead Restaurant Group which includes venues such as Portland and Clipstone, has been brought in to the role with a lot of experience behind him. Orbaum will be responsible for front-of-house operations at The General Tarleton and future projects for the group at Jeopardy Hospitality.

Aled Williams is the restaurant’s new executive chef, Williams has a good background in food, having been head of food and innovation at TRUEfoods and head chef at Michelin-starred Northcote. He’s also appeared for Wales on the BBC’s Great British Menu and is a recipient of the Gordon Ramsay Scholarship. Chef Williams will be charged with creating a menu that is a celebration of classic pub favourites.

Premium Pub Classics and house specialties

The menu from Williams will feature elevated pub classics using locally sourced ingredients. But guys come here for the steak and Guinness pie that comes with baked potato mash, Savoy cabbage and a deep gravy. There’ll also be a GT Burger, made from Dexter beef from the Banks farm, Red Sparkenhoe cheese and house-made pickles.

Jeopardy Hospitality is one of the businesses in the wider Tommy Banks Group, which also owns other sites such as The Black Swan at Oldstead, Roots York, The Abbey Inn at Byland and Made In Oldstead. Tommy Banks has become a household name in the UK’s culinary scene, most famously for The Black Swan, that is Michelin-starred and nationally recognized.
