Following an exhaustive deep-water search, a skilled team comprising underwater archaeologists and marine robotics experts has unveiled a sonar image that has the potential to solve one of the greatest modern mysteries—the disappearance of Amelia Earhart. This sonar image was captured to the west of Earhart’s projected landing point, in a region of the Pacific Ocean untouched by known shipwrecks. The image reveals contours that closely resemble the unique dual tails and dimensions of her renowned aircraft.

The effort was led by Deep Sea Vision (DSV), a marine robotics company based in Charleston, South Carolina, under the leadership of CEO Tony Romeo. DSV was pursuing the missing aircraft based on the “Date Line theory” regarding her disappearance nearly 87 years ago. This theory, initially proposed in 2010 by Liz Smith, a former NASA employee and amateur pilot, suggests that Amelia Earhart’s disappearance was caused by a simple mistake—failing to adjust the calendar by one day as she crossed the International Date Line. Smith proposed that Amelia’s navigator, Fred Noonan, miscalculated his celestial navigation by neglecting to correct the date from July 3 to July 2 as they crossed the Date Line, resulting in a westward navigation error of 60 miles.

As a private pilot himself, Tony Romeo, along with his brother Lloyd Romeo, found merit in Smith’s theory and delved deeper into the celestial mathematics she had laid out. The Romeos came to believe that, after 17 hours of exhausting flight, it was entirely plausible for Fred Noonan to have made such an error. The theory and the specific area described by Smith had never been searched—until now.

Tony Romeo expressed little surprise at finding the aircraft largely intact, stating, “We always believed that she [Amelia Earhart] would have made every effort to land the aircraft gently on the water, and the aircraft signature we see in the sonar image suggests that may indeed be the case.” Romeo expressed hope that they could provide answers to this long-standing question in the near future, saying, “We’re thrilled to have made this discovery towards the end of our expedition, and we intend to bring closure to this remarkable American story.”

The Deep Sea Vision team, consisting of a diverse group of experts, demonstrated that diligent efforts and cutting-edge technology could take on the monumental task of locating Earhart’s Lockheed Electra. Over a period of 90 days, the DSV team combed through 5,200 square miles of the Pacific Ocean floor, exceeding the efforts of all previous searches combined. Their secret weapon, the modified HUGIN 6000 autonomous underwater vehicle, outperformed any submersible used before, capable of reaching full ocean depth. DSV further enhanced the equipment by modifying the side-scan sonar to cover nearly 1,600-meter-wide swaths instead of the typical 450 meters. These modifications were made possible through the efforts of DSV’s President of Operations, Craig Wallace, who Romeo personally recruited from the sonar manufacturing industry to assist in organizing the expedition.

The team launched their expedition from a small Pacific island, a four-day cruise from where the discovery was eventually made. Each sonar equipment dive lasted nearly two days and generated several terabytes of data from scanning the seafloor. The international team worked tirelessly, employing state-of-the-art software developed on the fly as the mission progressed. Their discovery, which came at the conclusion of the expedition, represented a triumph of technology and an unwavering commitment to resolving the mystery surrounding an American icon.

Amelia Earhart’s fate has been a subject of speculation and conspiracy theories since her mysterious disappearance in 1937. She remains an enduring symbol of her era, championing women’s rights and embodying the pioneering spirit of early aviation. DSV believes they are one step closer to solving this profound mystery and has opted to keep all additional information, including the exact location, strictly confidential. While Tony Romeo is highly optimistic about their find, he acknowledges that there has been considerable internal debate about whether to release the sonar image to the public. Numerous prominent experts are working to validate DSV’s findings, including Dorothy Cochrane, Aeronautics Curator at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, who remarked, “We are intrigued by DSV’s initial imagery and believe it warrants further exploration in the ongoing search for Amelia Earhart’s aircraft near Howland Island.”

Unraveling the mystery of Earhart’s whereabouts is just one of several projects that Tony Romeo and Deep Sea Vision are undertaking. The investment made to establish the company is already leading to more exciting ventures. DSV has already concluded a yet-to-be-announced project in the Pacific and is currently providing their technology for a long-term project in Australia.
