It was a role she was extremely proud of. “I was cast with them,” she told the South African outlet News 24 in 2022 of working with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. “Which means the director saw something in me, that I’m also on that caliber.”

Gabisile Connie Chiume was born on June 5, 1952, in Welkom, the second-largest city in the Free State province of South Africa. She is survived by her three children and five grandchildren.

With a career spanning over 40 years, Chiume knew that she was breaking down barriers in the industry for the black actors and actresses who would follow in her footsteps.

“When I started, there wasn’t even a TV station for Black people,” she told News 24. “There’s been progress in that aspect,” she said, “and the money that we were earning then, it’s much, much better now. But there’s still a lot we can do to change the landscape.”
