A study published in JAMA Pediatrics this June found that, after the 2010 United States Supreme Court decision in McDonald v. City of Chicago gave states more leniency to set their own gun legislation, states with the most permissive gun laws had a higher incidence of firearms-related deaths of children younger than 17. Between 2011 and 2023, those states experienced over 7,000 more pediatric gun deaths than in the years prior to the decision. In the same time period, four states with stricter gun policies experienced a decrease in shooting deaths among children and teens.
