The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has announced Samuel Maubanc as the new director general for CLIA Europe.

Based in Brussels, Maubanc brings nearly two decades of experience in EU policy, climate, and government relations to his new role, succeeding Marie-Caroline Laurent, who recently joined MSC Group.

In his new position, Maubanc will lead advocacy efforts for CLIA’s European office, focusing on promoting the cruise industry’s transition to net-zero emissions by 2050.

He will work closely with CLIA-member cruise lines, ports, and destinations to advance policies supporting sustainable energy solutions and responsible growth across Europe.

Kelly Craighead, president and CEO of CLIA, welcomed Maubanc, noting his significant expertise in renewable energy and circular economy solutions.

“Sam’s deep understanding of climate policy and advocacy will be instrumental in advancing our industry’s commitment to sustainability and ensuring the continued success of our member lines,” Craighead said.

Maubanc expressed enthusiasm for the role, emphasizing the urgency of building sustainable transport solutions, particularly under the EU’s Fit-for-55 policy framework.

“The momentum for sustainable transport has never been greater,” he stated.

“The cruise industry is pivotal for European competitiveness and maritime innovation, and I look forward to collaborating with policymakers and stakeholders to elevate our sector’s leadership in sustainability.”

Before joining CLIA, Maubanc served as head of EU Affairs and general manager for Neste, a global leader in renewable fuels, where he influenced sustainable energy policy discussions.

He also previously led Liquid Gas Europe, representing the liquid gas industry in Brussels.

Maubanc holds an executive master’s degree in management from Brussels Solvay Business School and a master’s degree in European studies from Aalborg University, Denmark.
