After an exhaustive and rigorous selection process, the Board has chosen to appoint Andrew to lead the organisation into its future phase of growth into sustainability and operational excellence. With 30 years of distinguished service in national and international leadership roles, Andrew is ideally positioned to lead GPC into its future objectives of innovation, community contribution, and operational success.

In a statement released by GPC Chair, Maree Adshead, she highlighted Andrew’s extensive experience in managing complex, large-scale, and geographically distributed operations. “Andrew’s appointment marks a significant step towards strengthening GPC’s core business. Andrew Johnson’s Leadership Journey

Andrew Johnson’s impressive career trajectory has seen him successfully navigate large, complex organisations, from national bodies to globally recognised institutions. His role as CEO of the Bureau of Meteorology, a position he has held for the past nine years, stands out in his professional history. At the Bureau, Andrew was instrumental in leading transformative changes in the organisation, enhancing customer service delivery, and modernising technologies, all while responding to the disruptions caused by COVID-19 and weather-related crises.

Before his tenure at the Bureau of Meteorology, Andrew spent nearly a decade as a member of the Executive Team at CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency. His work included overseeing the organisation’s marine, land, and water operations. Notably, his efforts contributed to the management of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, land and water management in Northern Australia, and advancements in the unconventional gas sector.

Andrew’s technical expertise and leadership in infrastructure development also extend to shipbuilding in Singapore, technology precincts in Townsville and Brisbane, and some of the largest IT transformation programs within the Australian Government.

As Andrew prepares to take on the role of GPC CEO in September 2025, his leadership style will focus on ensuring GPC’s continued growth and success. The port’s future is closely linked to Queensland’s prosperity, and Andrew’s vast experience will be critical to maintaining and expanding GPC’s position as a leader in the maritime and multi-commodity sectors. With Andrew’s deep understanding of the sector, GPC is poised to continue delivering substantial value for the Queensland economy.

Maree Adshead further noted, “Andrew’s significant experience, both domestically and internationally, positions him perfectly to lead GPC into the future. In the interim, Jenelle Druce will continue serving as Acting CEO until Andrew Johnson officially begins his role on September 22, 2025. Jenelle’s leadership during this transitional period has been invaluable, providing continuity for GPC’s operations while ensuring the organisation is on track to meet its strategic objectives.

Andrew’s arrival at GPC comes at a critical time as the port embarks on an ambitious journey of transformation and growth.
