IndiGo increases footprint at Hindon Airport, launches new flights connecting nine Indian cities

Hindon Airport: The move will bolster regional connectivity and air infrastructure in the countryUnion Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu on Wednesday launched a new IndiGo Airlines flight from Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad. This historic move, reported by ANI, has now made IndiGo the second airline, after Air India Express, to fly from this important airport in the National Capital Region (NCR) of India.

Expanding Connectivity Across India

The inauguration of these new flight services will make Hindon Airport accessible by air to nine of the country’s key destinations – Bengaluru, Kolkata, Varanasi, Goa, Patna, Chennai, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Indore. This additional link is a big step for Hindon Airport, as it increases the travel options greatly for passengers residing around Ghaziabad and other parts of the National Capital Region.

Addressing the gathering during the launch, Minister Naidu said “It’s a milestone under the Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) scheme. He pointed out these routes reflect dreams and aspirations of common Indian looking at better accessibility and economic opportunities throughout the region.

Robust Growth in Indian Aviation

Naidu said India has experienced tremendous growth in its aviation industry in the last 10 years with an increase in fleet size, improved airport terminals and rise in number of passengers. “Civil aviation from tier II and III cities will increase significantly during 2024-2034, which we have to utilise. Hindon Airport will be a great example,” he observed.

This strategic move now gives passengers from the NCR the option of dual-airport operations in addition to Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) and Hindon Airport (HDO), thereby helping in decongesting passenger traffic and delivering convenience to passengers.

Infrastructure and Operational Excellence

Launched in 2019 with an investment of ₹50 crore under the UDAN scheme with support from the Indian Air Force, Hindon Airport’s passenger movement has increased manifold. In his speech Minister Naidu informed that the annual number of passengers had increased from around 8,000 in 2019 to more than 80,000 at present, indicative of phenomenal growth and improved quality of service.

The aviation sector has a huge potential and in the current Budget 2025-26, the Union Government has proposed enhanced allocations and a string of initiatives to make civil aviation infrastructure and connectivity even stronger.

Future Vision & Modified UDAN Scheme

To boost regional connectivity and expedite the growth of the domestic aviation sector, Minister Naidu outlined a reshaped UDAN scheme. This underpins a plan to connect 120 new destinations by air and to be able to service more than four crore passengers in 10 years. The scheme aims to make air travel accessible to the common man by making it affordable and convenient, to promote tourism, increase employment potential, affordable with financial contributions by the Centre, State Governments and stakeholders so as to: (Provide connectivity to un-served and under-served airports and make flying more accessible.)

Launched in 2017, UDAN has radically enhanced air connectivity to and from unserved and underserved airports in India, since then 2.5 fold increase in the number of operational airports, and ushering in a spirit of enterprise in the remotest parts of the country.

The aviation industry in India has been experiencing transformational expansion and the government has an ambitious vision to make India a global aviation hub by 2030. IndiGo’s initiative in adding new flight routes for services at Hindon Airport is an important step in this direction.”
