In an astonishing breakthrough, archaeologists in Jerusalem have unearthed the first-ever physical proof of extreme asceticism practiced by Byzantine nuns. A skeleton wrapped in heavy iron chains—buried beneath the altar of an ancient monastery—has revealed new dimensions of religious devotion. Until now, such practices were only known from historical texts. This newly discovered nun, now dubbed the “Nun of the Rings,” may have been a local ascetic or a devotee who migrated to Jerusalem from Syria, where such practices were widespread.

Theodoret of Cyrrhus, a 5th-century historian, documented the existence of women like Marana and Cyra, who voluntarily bound themselves with chains for 42 years. Other known female ascetics include:

• Saint Pelagia, who disguised herself as a man to live as a hermit on the Mount of Olives.
• Saint Marina the Syrian, who adopted a male identity to join a monastery and endured false accusations, only to be revered posthumously.

Research indicates that the tradition of extreme asceticism, particularly the practice of wearing iron chains, originated in northern Syria and Anatolia before spreading westward to Italy, France, and England, and southward to Jerusalem and Egypt. This newly discovered nun provides concrete evidence that female monastics in Jerusalem also engaged in these extreme religious practices.

A Timely Discovery on International Women’s Day

This find gains even greater significance as it emerges during International Women’s Day celebrations. These women lived in a patriarchal society that often limited their participation in religious leadership. Yet, through their asceticism, they carved a unique space for themselves, embodying faith, endurance, and defiance against societal norms.

The Israel Antiquities Authority has emphasized that this discovery will lead to further research into female monastic life and ascetic practices in ancient Jerusalem.
