Last Wednesday, Australia became the first country in the world to ban all social media use for people under the age of sixteen. This requires platforms like Tiktok, YouTube, Instagram, X, and others to deactivate existing accounts for younger teens, and to prevent them from creating new accounts. Businesses are required to implement age-verification measures in order to comply, and those that don’t enforce the ban could face fines of up to $32 million ($49.5 million in Australian dollars). Parents and kids won’t be held responsible if they break the ban, but they also can’t “self verify” their age to skirt the ban. Some platforms, like Google Classroom and WhatsApp, are exempt, and others that don’t require an account to access will still be viewable. Not surprisingly certain companies oppose the ban, with some (like Snapchat) even claiming that their services don’t qualify as social media. Reddit filed lawsuit against the ban on Friday.
