Watch The Season 5 Premiere Of ‘Listen To Black Women’ Episode 1: ‘The Pleasure Principles’
The highly anticipated Season 5 premiere of Listen to Black Women is here, and it kicks off with an unfiltered, thought-provoking conversation about sexuality and pleasure. On Episode 1 titled, “The Pleasure Principles,” host Lore’l is joined by a dynamic panel of Black women, including award-winning journalist Danielle Young, media personality Jessie Woo, Harlem actress Jerrie Johnson, and TV personality Torrei Hart.
Together, they dive deep into everything from navigating religious shame and judgment around sexual expression to the complexities of the “Hoe Phase,” advocating for body autonomy and pleasure, and learning how to engage in safe, fulfilling sexual experiences.
The group also opens up about their personal experiences with sex and pleasure. For Woo, it took her “years” to feel “comfortable” discovering what she likes from a partner during sex. Hart shares that, growing up, she felt she had no one in her family, including her mother, with whom she could openly discuss sex or receive education on the topic.
“I used to sneak and do a lot of stuff because I felt like I couldn’t talk to my mom,” the 46-year-old star revealed.
Black women often navigate unique challenges when it comes to expressing their sexuality and claiming their pleasure, facing deeper levels of judgment compared to women of other races. Woo highlights how white women are frequently shielded from being labeled as promiscuous or judged for openly expressing their sexuality, while Black women are often subjected to harsher scrutiny and stereotypes. This disparity adds layers of complexity to how Black women experience and embrace their sexual autonomy.
“It’s just so sad that women have this shame when it comes to sex,” Young adds in the eye-opening episode.
That’s why for Johnson, education and representation are crucial when it comes to advocating for Black women. The star, who portrays the sexually liberated Tye Reynolds on the hit Amazon Prime Video series, Harlem, stressed the importance of depicting Black women engaging in consensual, pleasurable sex on screen. She notes that many Black women aren’t taught to prioritize their own pleasure throughout their sexual journeys. Johnson hopes to challenge stereotypes and create a more inclusive narrative around Black women’s sexuality.
This is a candid, unapologetic discussion that you won’t want to miss! Watch Season 5 Episode 1 of Listen To Black Women above.
