This week on the Mompreneurs podcast, we meet Brooke Carrington — a wife, mother of two, and the visionary behind Wrapper’s Delight, the company that elevated the art of Christmas gift wrapping with its unique designs. Carrington sat down with Mompreneurs host Nancy Redd as she shared the inspiration behind her inclusive gift wrap company. Also in this episode, she reflected on the early days of the business and explained why she’s keeping her 9 to 5 even as a successful entrepreneur.

‘I had a brand-new business before the sun came up.’

Carrington described the moment that inspired her to create Wrapper’s Delight during the global pandemic, a pivotal time that she did not take for granted. “We’re stuck at home. Either you’re going to take advantage of this time to figure out what your passions are, to reconnect with your loved ones, or just work on you,” she recalled thinking at the time.

Carrington was motivated to seek a new path. One night, inspiration struck. “It came to me in my sleep,” she said. “I sat straight up in my bed and I said, ‘God, I’m listening.’” With her husband sleeping by her side, she secured a website domain for her new business, setting the wheels in motion.

“One thing that I took from the pandemic was execution. No more second-guessing for me. When God puts something in me, and it feels clear, I’m going all in. Just like I did that night. I had a brand-new business before the sun came up.”

At the time, diverse representation was severely lacking in Christmas offerings like gift wrap and other holiday items. Carrington was part of a wave of like-minded businesses that began producing Christmas designs featuring Black Santa. “There was such a gap in the market of Black Santas. We weren’t seeing it. It was very few and far between,” she said.

Wrapper’s Delight sold out in its first year.

The idea came to her that June. By Christmas, she had 1,000 rolls of wrapping paper featuring their OG Black Santa design, illustrated by her husband, ready for sale. They sold out that year. The demand was clearly there. The following Christmas, they continued to release new designs, and Wrapper’s Delight has since expanded to include gift bags, gift boxes, family pajama sets, and more.

‘Representation matters.’

For the Carringtons, Wrapper’s Delight is about creating Christmas designs that reflect the culture — for kids everywhere, including their own. “That was our driving force, to let our children and all the children of the world that are like us, to see themselves represented. Like the saying goes: representation matters,” said Carrington.

They are leaving a legacy for their children.

“The fact that my children know that mommy and daddy created this, they are so inspired. The inspiration that we see in them, the way their eyes light up every Christmas, I will always remember the look on their faces when we launched and showed them the wrapping paper for the first time. If nothing else, it gave me the motivation to never stop doing this.”

“Being able to instill that drive and force within them is the ultimate blessing. It’s what we as parents want, to be that inspiration and source of motivation for our children. It’s great. They are definitely creatives in their own way.”

Why she’s keeping her 9 to 5

In addition to Wrapper’s Delight, Carrington runs multiple businesses including a clothing line and a podcast, and she works full-time. “As a mompreneur, aside from parenting and marriage, I’m also juggling a 9 to 5. I am fortunate enough to be able to have my career in banking as well,” she said. “My job is not stressful. I work for a great company aside from entrepreneurship, so I’m thankful and blessed to be in the position that I’m in, to be able to do all of this at once and have the support from my 9 to 5.”

Advice for aspiring mompreneurs

“Go for it. What’s the worst that could happen? Some words that I live by are: ‘Grace in every challenge, gratitude in every success.’ As a mompreneur, it’s essential to give yourself grace during difficult times, and to always stay grateful for the progress you make no matter how small.”
