Mompreneurs: Shanicia Boswell And The Art Of Healing Mother-Daughter Bonds
On this episode of Mompreneurs, Shanicia Boswell dives into her inspiring journey and how she is manifesting her mission to heal generational trauma from mother to mother.
Whether she is authoring books or planning retreats, Boswell’s work is guided by a singular vision: “Every scope of my businesses is created out of passion, love, womanhood, community, sisterhood, motherhood, healing generational trauma, cleansing our bloodline,” Boswell told Mompreneurs host Nancy Redd. “If the woman heals, we heal everything. We’ve got to bring that respect back to us.”
Boswell made work of her experience both as a mother and as a daughter herself.
Her collaborative blogging platform, Black Moms Blog, drew in a community of half a million moms from around the world that follow for inspiration and advice. While Black Moms Blog was what launched Boswell’s breakthrough into entrepreneurship and provided the foundation for her success today, this was not her original intent. “I created Black Moms Blog not for any type of monetary gain but for community,” she said. “I desperately needed community.”
As a new mom at 23 years old, Boswell longed for connection and belonging. “I felt very alone,” she said. “I didn’t know how to do this mothering thing at such a young age.”
While Black Moms Blog was born out of necessity, it began making money down the road during a challenging time in the young mother’s journey. Even though she was in survival mode during this pivotal moment, Boswell chose to bet on herself and her vision. And it paid off in a big way. “I’ve been full-time entrepreneur-ing it ever since. That’s my story and I’m so proud of my story.”

Her retreat business facilitates healing and strengthening mother-daughter bonds.
Through The Self Care Retreat, her latest venture, Boswell artfully curates experiences for women of color to gather, celebrate sisterhood, rest and heal in breathtaking settings around the globe. Since launching the first-ever retreat in the summer of 2019, The Self Care Retreat has grown to offer Mommy & Me getaways and next year will debut a new retreat called Mothering The Mama: An Intense Womb Healing Retreat for Adult Mothers and Daughters.
“Those mother wounds, those inner child wounds, when it comes to mothering are so heavy and they stay with us for life,” said Boswell. “A part of this retreat is allowing us to sit with our mothers and have those conversations — for us to hear the ‘I’m sorry’ and for them to hear that ‘I still love you as my mom.’ It’s so necessary.”

Boswell is building a legacy with self-care at its core.
Boswell’s approach to her businesses is consistent throughout: build a strong foundation that will last, and allow rest as needed. “I never want to present this workaholic girlboss,” she said. “It looks that way sometimes but if I need the space I’ll take it.”
“Don’t go into it with the mindset of hustling, because once it stops growing, you put it down and you quit it,” Boswell advised. “But if you put your full effort into it and you really grow that thing out to become a standalone business, you’ve created a company that has a legacy behind it.”
‘It’s not always sunshine and laughter. Sometimes it’s tough.’
Boswell cherishes her close bond with 11 year old daughter Kamryn, who has been by her side since day one. The proud mom allows her daughter to see every side of the journey — the highs and the lows.
“There’s this thought that once you become a parent your life stops. And I’ll never understand why people feel that way,” said Boswell. “The reason that I have my daughter involved in my life in so many different ways is because this is a part of her story as well, is to not only see me in my work life but to see me in my happiness, my joy, my self-care, my stress even. And that’s a very real conversation I have with her.”
“This is not always easy, it’s not always sunshine and laughter. Sometimes it’s tough,” Boswell added. “So she doesn’t just see me in this business aspect of an entrepreneur, but she sees me as an adult with emotions, because I didn’t always see my mom in that way.”
Also in this episode of Mompreneurs, Boswell discussed dealing with burnout, being a celebrated author, and what she is manifesting for the future. Watch the full conversation above.
