A series of studies conducted by researchers at Cornell University and MIT in 2023, and published this May in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, found that people who believe conspiracy theories are unusually overconfident in their beliefs, and greatly overestimate how many people agree with them. For instance, in one study sample only 8 percent of the nearly 5,000 participants thought that a wild claim popularized on social media was true, but that the 8 percent who thought it was true also believed that 61 percent of other people thought it was true. “What we observed is that [some people] tend to strongly believe these conspiracies despite the fact that there’s counter evidence or a lot of people disagree,” psychologist and study co-author Gordon Pennycook notes. “Having overconfidence is that buffer that stops you from learning from other people. You end up not just going down the rabbit hole, you’re doing laps down there.”
