Qatar Airways and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) recently announced the extension of their partnership, which aims to facilitate the delivery of emergency supplies to refugees and internally displaced persons globally. This extension was formalized at a ceremony featuring speeches from Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, and UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr. Filippo Grandi. Also present were UNHCR’s Representative to Qatar, Mr. Ahmed Mohsen, and Qatar Airways Chief Cargo Officer, Mr. Mark Drusch.

During the event, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer highlighted the continuation of their collaborative efforts for another two years, emphasizing the impact of their prior work together. Over the last two years, Qatar Airways Cargo has actively collaborated with UNHCR to distribute humanitarian aid, improving the lives of displaced individuals across the globe. Through this renewed agreement, Qatar Airways commits to donating an additional 400 tonnes of cargo space to aid UNHCR in transporting essential supplies to those in dire need.

Leveraging its expansive network from the Hamad International Airport, recently named the ‘World’s Best Airport’ at the Skytrax Airport Awards, Qatar Airways utilizes its significant resources, including a fleet of 28 freighters and over 200 passenger aircraft. This setup supports a vast network covering 70 dedicated cargo and over 170 passenger destinations worldwide.

Ahmed Mohsen, UNHCR’s Representative to the State of Qatar expressed his appreciation for the strategic humanitarian partnership with Qatar Airways and stated: “We highly appreciate this vital partnership and are proud to renew it for two additional years, which reflects Qatar Airways’ solid commitment towards supporting our humanitarian efforts, in terms of delivering essential relief items to those most in need.”

In addition, he praised Qatar Airway’s dedication over the past years, and said: “Since establishing our partnership with Qatar Airways in May 2020, amid a critical time during the emergence of Covid-19, Qatar Airways has lent us a helping hand to support refugees and displaced communities with vital relief items and medical supplies.”

He also acknowledged Qatar Airways’ commitment since their partnership began in May 2020, a pivotal period marked by the COVID-19 pandemic onset, during which the airline played a crucial role in providing essential supplies and medical aid to displaced communities.

Through their ongoing collaboration, Qatar Airways and UNHCR are able to provide essential life-saving support such as water, medical services, and hygiene products to refugees, displaced persons, and host communities across the globe, ensuring their safety and well-being.
