WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech Unveils Long-Term Growth Strategy for Alberta’s Capital
WestJet today provided an extensive update on its strategic growth initiatives in Edmonton. Alexis von Hoensbroech, the CEO of WestJet Group, detailed the airline’s plans and partnerships for 2024 and beyond during his inaugural address at the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. In his speech, von Hoensbroech highlighted WestJet’s significant investments in Edmonton, focusing on enhancing transborder connections and expanding the domestic network.
“As the capital city of our home province, we are unwaveringly committed to maintaining and growing our title as Edmonton’s leading air carrier, as exhibited by our growing network and track record of fueling Edmonton’s economic pipeline through inbound tourism and investment attraction,” said von Hoensbroech to a sold-out business audience at the Glenora Club. “The Edmonton community is at the heart of our ambitious growth strategy as we strive to further cement the city’s well-deserved position on the global stage, making it one of the most connected cities of its size in North America.”
Boosting Economic Growth through Enhanced Transborder Connectivity
WestJet has been actively collaborating with essential partners to introduce flights vital for the business community, aiming to boost the local economy and support the airline’s expansion strategy. Notably, WestJet has significantly increased transborder services, including launching flights to three new U.S. cities—Atlanta, San Francisco, and Nashville—in 2023, in addition to enhancing connections to nine other U.S. locations. This expansion supports local businesses, conventions, and major events, and facilitates two-way tourism through travel and trade missions, particularly to Minneapolis and Atlanta.
Strategic Investments Position Edmonton at the Core of WestJet’s Plans
Edmonton ranks as one of WestJet’s most well-connected cities, second only to Calgary. This summer, WestJet boosted its capacity in Edmonton by 13% over the previous year and is preparing for continued rapid growth. As the primary airline at Edmonton International Airport, handling 50% of all flights, WestJet is a pivotal player in the region. This year alone, WestJet plans to offer direct flights to 40 unique destinations, including 20 domestic, 12 transborder, and eight to sunny locales. The establishment of a WestJet base in Edmonton has significantly impacted employment, more than doubling the number of jobs since 2019.
Record Growth in Domestic Routes
Capitalizing on its current momentum, WestJet is further expanding its domestic routes in Edmonton. Responding to the longstanding demands from the local business community, WestJet recently launched year-round, non-stop flights between Edmonton and Ottawa and Montreal, with well-timed and frequent services. Additionally, this summer marks a milestone with WestJet operating four direct routes between Edmonton and Atlantic Canada, the most extensive coast-to-coast connectivity ever offered in the region.
